How To: Create Community Stories That Inspire Others to Get Involved

People connect to moments, not mission statements. A good Story lets someone see what your work actually feels like: who was there, what happened, why it mattered. It turns your project from an idea into something human, something people want to be part of. And it's how the next person finds their way in. They watch what happened, and they want to be there for the next one. On Be The People, a Story is a short video clip that captures the work in real time.
Your phone is enough
You don't need professional gear. People trust what feels genuine, and a quick video shoot on your phone often does more than a produced explainer video, because it drops the viewer straight into the moment with you.
The strongest videos tend to catch:
- People working together
- A problem being solved in real time
- Someone reacting honestly, in their own words
- A visible change, before and after
- And behind the scenes of the event
Start in the middle of something happening
Skip the formal introduction. Don't set the scene — be the scene. Let people land in the moment already in motion.
Good openings sound like:
- "We didn't expect this many people to show up today, but look..."
- "By noon, every winter coat was gone."
- "This is the third shelf we've built today."
- "Listen to this."
The feeling you're after is that something exciting is already underway, and the viewer is being pulled right into it.
Make the people the hero
The Story isn't entirely about your project, and it's definitely not about the platform. It's about the people who showed up: the volunteer who drove an hour, the kid who read out loud for the first time, the neighbor who organized the whole thing and won't take the credit, the people who came together unexpectedly. Point the camera at them. Name them. Let them talk. When a viewer sees real people and recognizes something of themselves in it, that's the moment they start picturing their own place in the work.
Show what changed
Every strong Story has movement: something that's different afterward, even in a small way.
That might look like:
- Empty shelves, that became fully stocked ones
- A vacant lot, that became a community garden
- Strangers, that became teammates for a charity event
- A home that was destroyed, being rebuilt
The point isn't to oversell what happened. It's to make what happened easy to see.
Keep it simple and direct
A Story doesn't have to be a long documentary or production. What matters is that someone can watch it once and come away knowing:
- What happened
- Who was part of it
- Why it mattered
- How they can be part of the next one
One honest moment is usually enough.
