Help international university students thrive! Western Covenant University is seeking volunteer ESL instructors and conversation mentors to lead weekly academic support circles for international students strengthening their English skills.
About the Opportunity:
At Western Covenant University, we serve a vibrant population of international students who are working hard to complete their university degrees while mastering the English language.
To ensure our students succeed without added financial burden, we offer free, flexible Academic Language & Support Labs. We are seeking compassionate, encouraging volunteer instructors and conversation mentors to facilitate weekly small-group sessions focused on English comprehension, academic reading, and vocabulary building.

Whether you are a retired educator, a TESOL graduate student, or simply someone with a passion for helping international students succeed, your time and guidance will make a profound impact!
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead or facilitate small-group academic support sessions (1–2 times per week).
- Guide students through academic reading materials, university assignment comprehension, and specialized vocabulary (e.g., Academic Word List).
- Facilitate conversational English practice in a supportive, relaxed environment.
- Encourage and mentor adult international learners as they adjust to American higher education.
Time Commitment & Schedule:
- Flexible Commitment: Just 1.5 to 3 hours per week (1 or 2 sessions).
- Term Length: 8 to 10 weeks per term.
- Format: In-person sessions at our Los Angeles (Koreatown), Placentia (Orange County), or Torrance campuses. (Hybrid/Virtual options may also be available).
Qualifications:
- Advanced English fluency.
- A warm, encouraging attitude and patience with adult language learners.
- Background in ESL, English instruction, tutoring, or education is a major plus, but not required.
- All structured session outlines and academic support materials are provided—no lesson planning required!
What We Provide Volunteers:
- Pre-designed discussion prompts, vocabulary tools, and session guidelines.
- On-site support and guidance from our Academic Director.
- Formal letters of recommendation and official verification of volunteer hours upon request.
