Changing a life can begin with the first “hello.”
Somewhere in Los Angeles, a young reader is preparing to do something brave: ask for help, practice the skills that have been difficult, and eventually read aloud before an audience.
That student does not need a perfect teacher. That student needs one caring adult who will show up, listen, encourage, and say, “Let’s try it together.”
United Voices of Literacy, Inc. is seeking compassionate Virtual Literacy Coaches to work with students in grades 3–7 who need support with reading fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and confidence.

Attend Orientation, Background Check, Age
Through our Readers Are Leaders program, students and coaches use dramatic reading and reader’s theater to bring stories to life. Our fall class draws inspiration from the magical world of Harry Potter, giving hesitant readers a playful and imaginative reason to practice.
The commitment
-
- Meet virtually with a student and participate in small-group activities.
- Serve Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00–5:00 p.m. Pacific Time.
- Commit to one week or the complete five-week fall session beginning September 28.
- Attend a brief orientation and training before the program.
- Complete fingerprinting and a Department of Justice background check; UVOLI covers the cost.
The difference you will make
You will help one young reader:
-
- Practice reading without fear or embarrassment.
- Strengthen fluency, comprehension, and oral expression.
- Discover that mistakes are part of learning.
- Prepare to share improved reading skills in a culminating showcase.
- Experience the pride that comes from being heard.
You do not have to be a certified teacher. Patient listeners, encouraging mentors, actors, retirees, college students, professionals, and people who simply love reading and young people are warmly invited to apply. Training, reading materials, and ongoing support are provided.
Your coach experience will conclude with the five-week class, with the opportunity—but not the obligation—to continue supporting the student during UVOLI’s year-long literacy and youth-development journey.
You will be part of a team
Our coaches are not handed a child and left alone to figure everything out. You will receive guidance, support, and encouragement from the UVOLI team. We will also celebrate the time, care, a... Click "Join" for more information.
