From the ground up: National and local leaders join forces to help families recover

The Los Angeles 2025 wildfires destroyed more than 17,000 homes. But now, with help from athletes, artists, national organizations, community leaders, and neighbors, families in need have hope.

More than 500 volunteers showed up on Feb. 13 to rebuild the city and help families impacted the Eaton and Palisades wildfires. The NBA Cares Day of Service was hosted by NBA Cares, and elevated through Be The PeopleNational Leadership Council members, Habitat for Humanity, Stand Together, and other leaders and groups, including Darryl “DMC” McDaniels of RUN DMC, Aloe Blacc, the L.A. Clippers, Comcast NBCUniversal, Nike, and Baby2Baby.

Be The People is a nationwide effort to reignite the American spirit built upon the idea that if we want a country of the people, by the people, for the people, it is up to each person to play a part. The mission is to bring out the best in who we are as Americans.

“I’m committed to helping others rise,” said Grammy-nominated and multi-platinum artist Blacc, a member of the Be The People National Leadership Council and a resident of the Altadena community where fires destroyed his children’s school.

We’re showing that people in communities across the country are there for each other and inviting everyone to come together and do their part to solve even the toughest problems.”

Volunteers like Blacc built wall-frame home structures and assembled kits with household essentials for families in need. The wall frames will become part of permanent homes for low- to moderate-income households affected by the wildfires.

By partnering with organizations like NBA Cares, Be The People can make a direct impact on neighborhoods and their residents.

“The NBA has a unique ability to bring people together,” said Brian Hooks, Chairman and CEO of Stand Together, an NBA social impact partner. “When you pair the NBA and its extraordinary platform with partners like Habitat for Humanity and others who have deep roots in the communities they serve, it’s an opportunity to help many more people get involved to make a meaningful difference.”
